Armed Father Stops Gunman After Three Children and a Teacher Are Killed in Oregon School Shooting

An armed father shot and killed a 16-year-old gunman at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday after seeing him enter the school and following him inside. The teen had killed three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher. His brother identified the man as Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old carpenter with a concealed-carry permit whose two daughters attend the school. A second teacher and a 7-year-old are in critical condition. MORE ›

The Servant Problem: What the Billionaire Bunker Builders Think of the Men They Hire to Guard Them

By Dino Garner, former Army Ranger and founder of CRUCIBEL Journal

In 2017, five very wealthy men asked the media theorist Douglas Rushkoff how they could keep control of the Navy SEALs guarding their bunkers once money was worthless. Their ideas included combination locks on the food, disciplinary collars and robots.

Garner, who ran private security missions in hostile countries for years, argues that loyalty can't be forced. Guards stay at their posts because they trust the men beside them, their leaders share the danger and their own families are safe, not because the food is locked away.

Many of the people these shelters hire will be veterans, and Garner says the plans leave them carrying most of the risk, with owners underground and guards outside. Some shelters also have holding cells for unruly residents, and the guard who locks an owner inside could face legal trouble.

His advice to veterans offered this work is to settle the terms before signing, including whether their families can shelter with them and who is responsible if someone has to be detained.

UPDATES

01

The Houthis claimed a missile damaged a Saudi Eurofighter Typhoon over northern Yemen. Their infrared video shows a blast just ahead of the jet and a possible fuel trail from its wing, consistent with shrapnel from a near miss. Saudi Arabia has not confirmed the incident. More

02

Gunmen killed at least two security personnel in Iran's Sistan-Baluchestan province on Wednesday, including a women's Basij militia commander shot outside her home. The rights group HRANA has counted at least 94 people killed in 63 armed incidents in southeastern Iran since late March. More

03

Israel has reportedly not let a US contractor begin building a Gaza base for international stabilization troops. The Board of Peace hired Louisiana-based Arkel International more than two months ago for a site that would house about 150 Moroccan and Kosovan troops. More

04

The order to slow Starshield service for Ukraine's military came from inside the White House, two US officials and a Western official told Reuters, without saying who made the decision. President Trump said Friday, "It wasn't me, and I don't think it was Elon." More

05

Stratolaunch's Boeing 747 was photographed carrying an unidentified rocket under its left wing. The aircraft was landing at California's Mojave Air & Space Port with a chase plane, and the company, which flies hypersonic tests for the Pentagon, has not said what the rocket is. More

The Army's first MV-75 tiltrotors are due in 2027 at Fort Campbell's 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, though Bell called the accelerated schedule "tough." The aircraft, which will replace some Black Hawks, flies faster than 300 mph with up to 14 soldiers. More

SPECAT

➤ The military has awarded 202 Purple Hearts in the Iran war, a figure not previously disclosed, Task & Purpose reported. Soldiers received 184 of them, including 11 posthumous awards, and the total covers about a quarter of the 865 casualties the Pentagon has recorded.

➤  Tesla showed off its long-delayed second-generation Roadster Thursday at SpaceX's Texas test site, where cars fitted with cold-gas thrusters vaulted over a row of Tesla vehicles and flipped midair before landing. Production is set to begin in 2028, eight years later than first promised.

➤  Researchers tracking a fleet of AI agents scraping a Chinese mapping service got a reply when a New York Times reporter asked who it was. The answer, traced to Tencent's cloud, claimed to come from a single Claude assistant, though researchers doubt it was Anthropic's model.
